Pyramid Model

National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations
Our Approach to Behavior
At Fife Early Learning Center, we use the Pyramid Model for Promoting Social Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children. This is a positive, proactive framework designed to help all children learn important social and emotional skills in a safe, caring environment.
The Pyramid Model helps children:
- Build friendships and get along with others
- Express feelings in healthy ways
- Solve problems peacefully
- Feel safe, included, and valued
We focus on teaching rather than punishing. Just like children learn letters and numbers, they also learn how to follow expectations, manage big feelings, and be part of a community.
What This Looks Like in Our Classrooms
- Clear, consistent expectations are posted and taught through songs, stories, and play.
- Positive language is used to tell children what to do (“Use walking feet” instead of “Don’t run”).
- Problem-solving skills are taught step-by-step, with support from teachers.
- Visual supports help children understand routines and expectations.
- Family partnerships — we share strategies with families so children have the same support at home and school.
When More Support Is Needed
If a child needs extra help, we provide:
- Small group or one-on-one teaching for specific skills
- Individualized strategies to support their success
- Collaboration with families to create a consistent plan
We believe all children can learn the skills they need to be successful in school and in life. The Pyramid Model guides us in creating classrooms where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
